The "What do we do next?" page underscores the need for churches to actively pursue vision and planning rather than remaining stagnant. It uses a quote from Brandon Sanderson about "the next step" to illustrate this point. The page also details experience with specific visioning programs (Leighton Ford, Ministry Architects, PCUSA Vital Congregations) to demonstrate expertise in guiding churches through this process.Â
Throughout my ministry, a consistent thread has been the vital importance of vision and planning for the health and future of the church. I've had the privilege of being deeply involved in numerous visioning initiatives, each reinforcing the truth that standing still is not an option for a living, breathing body of faith. We are called to continually discern God's leading and courageously take the next step forward.
This resonates deeply with a sentiment I encountered in the writings of author Brandon Sanderson. In his Stormlight Archive series, a central character grapples with the question of the most important thing a person can do. Through his journey, he comes to a profound realization: "The most important step a man can take. It's not the first one, is it? It's the next one. Always the next step." This simple yet powerful truth applies so beautifully to the life of the church. We may celebrate past achievements and honor our traditions, but our faithfulness lies in our willingness to discern and take the next step into God's unfolding future for us.
My commitment to equipping churches for this ongoing journey has led me to participate in several impactful visioning and planning programs:
The Leighton Ford Thriving Ministries: During my time as an Elder at one congregation and later as a staff member at another, I was part of the transformative process guided by The Leighton Ford Thriving Ministries (you can learn more at https://lfmconnect.org/). This initiative provided invaluable frameworks and insights for discerning God's vision and developing practical strategies for growth and vitality. I experienced firsthand the power of their approach in helping churches identify their unique strengths and navigate the challenges and opportunities before them.
Ministry Architects: As a staff member, I also had the enriching experience of working with Ministry Architects (you can explore their work at https://ministryarchitects.com/). Their comprehensive and collaborative approach to strategic planning helped our team develop clear goals, align our ministries, and build a sustainable roadmap for the future. I deeply appreciated their focus on creating actionable steps that empowered the congregation to move forward with clarity and purpose.
PCUSA Vital Congregations Initiative: My commitment to the Presbyterian Church (USA) also led me to be involved in the Vital Congregations Revitalization Initiative (more information can be found at https://old.pcusa.org/resource/vital-congregations-revitalization-initiativ-90905/). This PCUSA program offered a valuable framework for congregations to engage in deep self-reflection, identify areas for growth, and develop strategies for renewed vitality and mission effectiveness. It underscored the denomination's commitment to equipping congregations for a thriving future.
I recently attended a SYNOD of the NE Connections to Transformation Conference in Jamaica, NY. This large group of pastors conferred with other pastors who have made significant changes in their churches' missions.
Through these diverse experiences, I have developed a deep understanding of the principles and practices that enable churches to discern God's vision effectively and create actionable plans for the future. I am passionate about helping congregations move beyond simply maintaining the status quo and embracing the exciting possibilities, one faithful "next step" at a time.
